Charles's Story

age 71 of Indiana, died Thursday, October 12, 2017 at UPMC Shadyside Hospital, Pittsburgh. He was born in 1946 in Altoona to Charles H. and Anna M. (Prostejovsky) Ruffing. Chuck was a member of St. Bernard of Clairvaux Roman Catholic Church, Indiana, the American Chemical Society (ACS), the ACS Rubber Div., Akron Rubber Group, Northeast Rubber Group, Rubber Manufactures Assoc., OSHA and Environmental Committee, Polyurethane Manufactures Assoc., and a life member of the NRA. He was self-employed as a farmer in his early career, then worked for B.F. Goodrich in Akron, OH. He followed with employment at BFG Tire Division in Akron, Oh and at the BFG Oaks Plant in PA, the McCreary Tire & Rubber Plant and McCreary Industrial Products Co. in Indiana, PA, and worked as a chemist and technical director for Rubber Rolls in Meadowlands, PA. Chuck retired in January 2013. Additionally, he operated a Christmas Tree Farm and enjoyed working on cars and tractors, and spending time with his grandchildren. He is survived by his wife of 47 years, Eileen M. (Byrne) Ruffing, Indiana; Diane McCurdy and husband Rich, Hummelstown; Charles T. Ruffing, Jr. and wife Jennifer, Port Matilda; Michele Ruffing, VA; six grandchildren, Ryan and Sara McCurdy, Charles, III, Kaitlyn, Thomas, and Emily Ruffing; two sisters, Carol Marcinko and husband George, Davidsville; Linda Folan and husband David, Johnstown.
He was preceded in death by his parents and his infant daughter Sandra Jean. Friends will be received on Monday from 2 to 4 and 6 to 9 P.M. at the Bowser-Minich Funeral Home, Indiana. A funeral mass will be celebrated on Tuesday at 1 P.M. at St. Bernard of Clairvaux Roman Catholic Church, Indiana. Interment will be made at the cemetery of the Basilica of St. Michael the Archangel, Loretto at 3:15 P.M. Memorial contributions may be made to the American Cancer Society, the Cancer Research Institute, or the Visiting Nurse Assoc.
