Events

Aubrey, Charlotte Goodwin, 91, Johnstown, died August 5, 2019 at Windber Hospice. Born October 8, 1927 to the late Martin and Marie (Brewton) Goodwin. Preceded in death by husband, Raimonde Aubrey; sister, Martha Adams; and grandson, Griffin Lucas Aubrey. Survived by children, Adrienne Aubrey Moldow, Johnstown; Angela Duckworth (Dennis), OH; Martin Aubrey (Cynthia), CO; grandchildren, Collyn and Colton Aubrey; Megan Hedden; Lacey Moldow; a niece; and nephews. Charlotte was a graduate of Valdosta State University and completed postgraduate studies at UPJ and IUP. She taught for 35 years in the Richland School District and was the president of the Johnstown Symphony Auxiliary for 9 years. For 50 years, Charlotte was the soloist at First Lutheran Church on Vine St. and a private voice teacher for 60 years with her husband. Together they taught many outstanding students. She starred at the Mountain Playhouse in Jennerstown where she performed many leading roles and performed as a soloist with the Johnstown Symphony with one of her most memorable performances being "Carmen". Charlotte was the honoree in arts and letters in the YWCA 2007 Tribute to Woman. Her life passions were her many gifts relating to music; her singing, mentoring of students to be their very best, developing the whole person and doing it with "vim, vigor, and vitality". She was a force to be reckoned with and had many endearing names, "The diva of Johnstown", Mrs. A, and Mom. There will be no other like her. Sing with the angels, Mama. A private celebration of Charlotte's life will be held at the convenience of the family. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Griffin Lucas Aubrey Creative Spirit Scholarship, https://www.sierranevada.edu/academics/fine-arts/aubrey-scholarship/ , Johnstown Symphony Auxiliary, or the Music Ministry at First Lutheran Church. Adrienne, Martin, and Angela, I am sorry as you mourn the loss of your mom. She was one of a kind. What an exciting, talented, and loving person she was. She and your father were quite a team. i took voice lessons from them during my junior high and high school years. Charlotte could demonstrate so perfectly what Raimonde was trying to get me to sing. She was so happy and giving.

I was a student of Charlotte and Raimonde Aubrey throughout my middle school and high school years. Many fond memories and they guided me throughout my singing career.
Rest In Peace beautiful and talented diva! I know you are singing with the angels💞

“Grief, I’ve learned, is really just love. It’s all the love you want to give, but cannot. All that unspent love gathers up in the corners of your eyes, the lump in your throat, and in that hollow part of your chest. Grief is just love with no place to go.”

My condolences to Adrienne. Angie and Marty. Charlotte was a wonderful artist. A great voice. The most charismatic person in the room. I remember Charlotte and Raymond for the positive influence they had on my early adulthood. Both were the best friends of my parents in Richland. RIP Charlotte.

I never had Mrs. Aubrey as a teacher but everybody in school knew her, she was vivacious and talented. Also, her husband lead the church choir at Saint Gregory‘s for a time and I believe it never sounded so good. Sorry for your loss

Adrienne, Angie, Marty and families: I am very sorry to read of your Mom's passing. What a great, long life! I have such wonderful memories of growing up across the street from the Aubrey family. Your Mom was the last parent to leave the neighborhood. She's with your Dad again! The heavenly choir is receiving voice lessons now! My best wishes to all.

The world lost an incredibly influential and loving woman. A woman who instilled discipline, compassion and service to community in young singers. Mrs. A was a wonderful teacher and mentor who taught us to use our voices and music to help others and make a difference, and doing so with love and grace. I wouldn’t be where I am without this woman, and her impact will certainly live on. I know she is in heaven leading her new choir of angels! 🎶❤️

My first real-life experience witnessing "how to enter a room" was Mrs. Aubrey. Following in the footsteps of my aunts, I took voice lessons from Mr. & Mrs. Aubrey in their home studio when I was in high school and college. When Mrs. Aubrey burst into the middle of a voice lesson to demonstrate the sound that Mr. Aubrey was helping me work toward, the energy in the room went up. She could be intimidating. She was incredibly talented. I appreciated that she felt that I was up to the task and challenged me. I love that you selected this photo of her to share. I remember this picture of her hanging in the home studio - a beautiful, talented soprano. I don't know how we got so lucky to have this... powerhouse couple in Johnstown so willing to share their talent and experience, but they both are teachers that I will forever treasure. My condolences to the family. Thank you for sharing your mother and grandmother with so many grateful students.Read more

My heart goes out to the family for the loss of such a special woman. I am grateful for the gift of singing she and Mr. Aubrey gave me. It has enhanced my life and I never would have been able to sing without their training. I had an average voice until I took lessons from them. They built what I have today. Please except my sincere sympathies. She was one of a kind. I'm so sorry for your loss.
