Derek's Story

of Windber and Conemaugh Township, passed away October 31, 2017 at West Penn Hospital, Pittsburgh. Born August 10, 1992, in Johnstown, son of Dennis and Cheryl (Orlosky) McDowell. Preceded in death by both grandparents. Survived by parents; sister, Ariel; fiancée, Brittany Miller; and her parents, Donna and Jim Zimmerman and Dan and Nina Miller; aunts, uncles and cousins. Derek graduated from Conemaugh Township Area High School in 2010, where he was active in the athletic and music departments. Derek proudly attended Shippensburg University and graduated in 2015 from UPJ. Derek was formerly employed by Flood City Church and ACRP Ebensburg as a T.S.S. Active member of former St. Stephens Catholic Church. At the request of the family there will be no viewing or visitation. All are welcome to attend a funeral Mass 11 a.m. Friday at Resurrection Parish, 324 Chestnut St., Johnstown, Fr. George Gulash and Fr. Andrew Stanko concelebrating. A celebration of Dereks life will also be held at Flood City Church on a date to be determined. Committal will be held at St. Stephen Cemetery. Derek won the battle against Acute Monocytic Leukemia but the battle was too much to win against graft vs host disease associated with the stem cell transplant.
