Dorothy Gessner Pohl, intellectually curious, community builder, feminist, beloved mother and grandmother, dear friend to many, died on November 24th, 2017, at the age of 87, surrounded by her loving family. Dottie was an active member of the Johnstown community for decades, volunteering as an advocate for the rape crisis center, the children's home, Rodef Shalom Synagogue, and Conemaugh Hospital. She later became director of volunteers at Conemaugh and a member of the leadership team of the new hospital foundation. She moved to Pittsburgh after retirement and volunteered with the childrens program at Carnegie Museum and enjoyed the symphony and theater. Her last few years were spent at Deerfield Retirement Community in Asheville, NC where she continued to impact and improve the community around her. Dottie was an avid reader of books and the New York Times, enjoyed travel, baking, and engaging in the life stories of everyone around her. She was married to the late Donald Pohl, MD and is survived by her three children, Rachel, Judith, and Charles, her nieces, Julie, Claudia, and Shelley, and six grandchildren, Jacob, Emma, Simon, Annie, Gabe, and Isaac who brought great joy to her life.
