89, of Portage, passed away, November 1, 2017 at home. Born March 7, 1928, in Portage, the son of the late John and Mary (Smindak) Nezneski. Left to cherish his memory is his loving wife of 61 years Emilie (Pascovich) Nezneski; adoring daughters, Dr. Lisa Schatz (Edward); Dr. Celeste Lewis (Randall); and Patrice Downs; grandchildren, Edward and George Schatz; Kira, Adria, and Sonya Lewis; and Alexander, Olivia, Evan and Zane Downs; great grandson, Lucas Schatz; and three siblings. He was a graduate of Portage Township High School. Edward proudly served his country as a member of the USAF band at Randolph Field, San Antonio, TX. After an honorable discharge he used the G.I. Bill to attend Indiana University of Pennsylvania earning a Bachelor of Science in Music Education. He earned a Masters Degree from Penn State University in Music Education. He is a life member of NEA, PSEA, and Phi Mu Alpha Sinfonia, Zeta Tau Chapter. He was a member of All American, Great Lakes, and Firemans Judging associations, which took him to competitions all over the East Coast. In addition he was a music supervisor at Portage Area High School; he was the Portage High School Band Director when the band was State Champs in 1971; and he was choir director at Ss. Peter and Paul Byzantine Catholic Church for over 35 years. Under his direction, the choir performed at the National Shrine of the Immaculate Conception in Washington D.C. He also was a music instructor at Mount Aloysius College and was honored as the man of the year by the American Legion in 1975. He was a benefactor for the Smile Train and Lakota Indians; was a member of Portage American Legion Post 430, AMVETS Post 150, and the Veterans Ritual Team. He was a person of great faith in our Lord saying the rosary daily. Friends received from 4-8 p.m. Sunday at the Serenko-Claar Funeral Home, PC, Portage where Parastas will be sung at 7:00 PM. Divine Liturgy will be celebrated at 10 a.m., Monday at Ss. Peter and Paul Byzantine Church, Portage. Father James Spontak and Fr. Joseph Raptosh concelebrating.
