MATSKO – John, 77, Ferndale, died Dec. 24, 2010, at Memorial Medical Center. Born Dec. 20, 1933, in St. Michael, son of Andrew and Mary (Danchak) Matsko. Preceded in death by parents; brothers, Andrew and Paul; sisters, Mary Malonek and Ann Matsko; and an infant sister. Survived by wife of 53 years, Shirlee A. (Yasenovsky); children, Steven M., married to the former Sharon Balogh, Virginia; Suzy R., married to James Hoffman, Windber; and John S., married to the former Mary Anne Marino, Maryland; and grandchildren, Jennifer (Matsko), married to Nick Feaster; Stephanie Matsko; Lauren Matsko; Nathan Hoffman; Patrick Hoffman; and John Michael Matsko. Brother of Michael, Elton; Julia Sturey, Johnstown; and Pete, South Carolina. Member of St. Andrew’s Catholic Church. He enjoyed hunting, fishing and gardening. He loved his family and sports, having never missed his children’s and grandchildren’s sporting events. His successful career started as a 1953 graduate of Adams Township High School. After he attended Michigan State University, where he was the 1957 football captain and achieved the All-American status, he was enlisted in the Army for two years. Also, John was a professional football player in Canada before accepting a teaching position at Ferndale Area School District and raising his family. In 1975, he was inducted into the Cambria County Sports Hall of Fame. Viewing and funeral service will be private, Father Angelo Patti. Committal, St. Michael Church Cemetery.
