a Greenwich resident and business owner of more than 40 years, passed away on September 4, 2017 at Greenwich Hospital. John was the son of Anthony and Katherine Salem, of Johnstown, Pennsylvania. The youngest of three children, Johnny was an outstanding football and basketball player in high school in and then at Valley Forge Military Academy. From there he went to the University of Pennsylvania where he played freshman football, lacrosse, and basketball on a full scholarship. He then played varsity football and started as a halfback and defensive back when Penn won the Ivy League his sophomore year. He worked those summers as a lifeguard in Stone Harbor, NJ. He worked hard, was honest, and excelled as the proprietor of his own paper product distribution business, JB Salem and Company. John loved his walks through Greenwich and Old Greenwich with his dog, Bear. He made friends every place he went, even when traveling to places far away. John lived his life with a full dedication and commitment to his family, his business, and his friends. He was a hard worker and a loyal friend. John is predeceased by his best friend, Bear, with whom he spent 14 years. He is survived by his daughter, Rebecca (Becky) Salem; two grandchildren, Jonah and Miles; his brother and sister-in-law, Tony and Cindy Salem; his sister, Marcia Nowakowski; three loving nephews, Tony, John, and Christian, and his adopted son, Thomas Barrett. John's life will be celebrated during a private memorial in Greenwich, CT.
