95, South Fork, passed away July 15, 2017 at home, surrounded by his family. Born March 7, 1922 in Benscreek (Portage), the son of Andrew and Elizabeth (Lesko) Gruss. Deceased family members include his parents, wife, Elizabeth "Betty" (Petrunak); sisters, Ann Pevac, Elizabeth Kuchera, and Mary Gruss; and brothers, George; Stephen; and Andrew Gruss. Survived by children, Joseph J. Gruss, Jr., married to the former Kathy Tully, Summerhill; Jane Gruss, South Fork; Betsy Gruss, Norfolk, VA; Alice, wife of Joseph Delso, Jr., St. Michael; and Kathleen Gruss, South Fork. His grandchildren include Joseph, wife Brenda Price, Johnstown; Kelly, Summerhill; Regina, husband Matthew Verostick, Windber; and Nick, Summerhill. Brother of Jean Rohaly and Verna Mort, both of Pittsburgh; John (Helen) Gruss, Wisconsin; Margaret, wife of John Trusik, Benscreek; and Dolores Nealen, New Jersey. Also survived by brother in law, William Kuchera; sisters in law, Pauline Gruss; and Bridget Gruss, and numerous nieces and nephews. Army veteran of WW II serving with the 795th MP Unit. Joe worked numerous jobs throughout his lifetime including Theile Body Shop, Windber and Bethlehem Mine #38 Ehrenfeld from where he retired. He enjoyed polka dancing, listening to polka music, playing his button box accordion, and gardening. Former private airplane pilot and was a volunteer maintenance and repairman for St. Anthonys Church, Fifficktown. Friends received from 2 to 4 and 6 to 8 p.m. Tuesday at Serenko-Claar Funeral Home, PC, Portage. Funeral Mass will be celebrated at 10:30 a.m. Wednesday at Most Holy Trinity Church, South Fork. Father Joseph Nale, Celebrant. Committal in St. James Cemetery, Summerhill. Military funeral rites by the Portage Ritual Team.
