62, Hollidaysburg, died July 26, 2017 at home surrounded by his loving family after a long battle with cancer. Born February 23, 1955 in Altoona, son of the late John J. and Jean (Moyer) Hershel. Preceded in death by infant brother, Patrick. Survived by wife of 38 years, the former Bonnie Biter whom he married June 30, 1979 in Loretto. Children: Jordan of Raleigh, NC, Matthew of Pittsburgh and Sarah of Hollidaysburg. Brother of Gloria Kuntz (Fred) of Lilly, Sally Behe (Fred) of Lilly, Elaine Roberts (Max) of Enterprise, AL, Carol Schultz of Odenville, AL, Marcia Thompson (Ray) of Elba, AL, Arthur (Carrie) of Keedysville, MD and Bruce (Deb) of Lilly. Also survived by numerous nieces and nephews. Joe served in the Army in Korea during the Vietnam War. He enjoyed working on cars, and known by his family as the fix it man, he was an avid Steeler fan, and enjoyed landscaping around the house. He retired from Cookson Electronics, Altoona in 2016 after 39 years. Former member of Lilly American Legion, he served as a volunteer for Hollidaysburg Boy Scouts and former coach of the Hollidaysburg AYSO Soccer. Member of St. Mary's Catholic Church, Hollidaysburg. Friends will be received from 4 to 8 PM Friday at the Gibbons Funeral Home, Ashville where a Vigil Service will be held Friday afternoon. Funeral Mass will be celebrated at 10:00 AM Saturday at Our Lady of the Alleghenies Catholic Church, Lilly, Rev. Anthony Lagarsky, Celebrant. Committal, St. Brigid Cemetery, Lilly. Military Rites will be conducted by Lilly American Legion. Family suggests contributions be made to Blair County Hospice in Joe's memory. www.gibbonsfhashvillecoalport.com
