Julia's Story

103, formerly of Salunga, and Cambria County, died peacefully on Sunday, March 12, 2017 at Brethren Village Retirement Community. Born in West Point, Cambria County, she was the daughter of the late Celestino and Susanna Maria Cullet Henry. A devoted homemaker, Julia was the wife of the late Hayes Gladfelter who died in 1974; her first husband was the late Richard L. Strait who died in 1961. In her early years, Julia helped in the family country grocery store "Strait's Store" located in Mineral Point. She was an active and faithful member of the Hempfield Church of the Brethren, East Petersburg, and served as custodian, volunteered with the Brethren Disaster Relief Auction, and was a part of the women's sewing circle. Her interest's incuded: cooking, vegetable and flower gardening, quilting, sewing, and rooting for her Pittsburgh Pirates Baseball Team. Julia had a deep abiding love and passion for her children, grandchildren, great-grandchildren, great-great grandchildren, and treasured each day she could share her life with them through the years. Surviving is a son, A. Eugene husband of Carlene Marsh Strait of Manheim, four grandchildren, nine great grandchildren, and two great great grandsons. Preceding her in death is a daughter, Joann Strait, two brothers: Frank and Joseph Henry, and two sisters: Mary Marhefka and Margaret Henry. Relatives and friends are respectfully invited to attend her funeral service at the Brethren Village Chapel, 3001 Lititz Pike, Lancaster, on Monday, March 20, 2017 at 11:00 AM. There will be a viewing on Monday morning in the chapel from 10:00 AM until the time of the service; additional services will be at the Conemaugh Church of the Brethren, 1256 William Penn Avenue, Johnstown, on Tuesday, March 21, 2017 at 11:00 AM, there will be a viewing on Tuesday in the church from 10:00 AM until the time of the service. Interment will be Tuesday immediately following the service in Forest Lawn Memorial Park, Johnstown.
