Laura's Story

90, formerly of New Florence and Ocala, FL, died Saturday, December 23, 2017 at The Arbors in St. Barnabas, Gibsonia, PA. She was born July 8, 1927 in Ligonier, a daughter of the late Eugene and Esther Johnson Riggs. Laura graduated from Ligonier High School in 1944 at the age of 16 and went to work for the Dept. of Justice as a fingerprint classifier in Washington, DC, later participating in the Nurse Cadet Training Program. In 1946 she married James P. Reed of Bolivar. As a mother of three, she attended Indiana University of Pennsylvania where she obtained her undergraduate and graduate degrees in 1966 and 1969 respectively. A year before her husband's death in 1997 the couple celebrated their 50th Anniversary. Prior to her retirement, Laura she had been an educator in the Ligonier Valley School District for over 22 years. She was a member of the former St. Paul's Lutheran Church in Darlington and attended various churches in Saxonburg, Mars, and Gibsonia where she had moved to be near her extended family. Laura was an excellent seamstress and made beautiful appliqu├ęd quilts. She once won "Best of Show" at the Westmoreland County Fair for one of her quilts. She enjoyed reading, crossword puzzles,cryptograms, and jigsaw puzzles. She and her husband spent much of their time together in Penna. and Florida and Laura participated in several golf leagues in the Ligonier Valley. In addition to her parents she was preceded in death by four siblings, Evelyn Uhl, Nancy Hay, Robert and Sidney Riggs. Laura is survived by three children: Linda R. (Douglas) Solich of East Brady, Kathy (Julian Weiss) Reed of New York City, and James E. (Catherine) Reed of Keymar, MD, six grandchildren: Benjamin Solich, Courtney Frank, Geoffrey and Leslie Reed, and Adrian and Evan Weiss, ten great grandchildren: Max and Nora Solich, Effie and Vivian Frank, Alex and Abby Reed, James and Rowan Braine, and Lucian and Anouk Weiss,, and a sister Mary Jo (Robert) Hall of Friedens. Family and friends of Laura's will gather together Thursday from 2-4 and 6-8 PM at the J. Paul McCracken Funeral Chapel, Inc., 144 East Main Street, Ligonier, where her life will be celebrated Friday at 11:00AM with the Rev. Dr. J. Paul McCracken officiating.
