92, of Johnstown, died September 16, 2017. Born July 12, 1925 in Johnstown, son of Peter and Theresa (Salvino) Vizza.Preceded in death by parents, loving wife of 61 years Teresa (Furnari), brothers Ralph, James, Louis, Angelo, Joseph, sisters Maria Vizza, Rose Gigliotti, and Mary Lope. Survived by his loving and devoted sons Peter; Vincent married to Karen (Twardziak); Paul married to Cindy (Popchak); and John married to Kathy (Sipes); grandchildren, Emily; Margery; Joseph; Matthew married to Julia (Nissi); Michael; Paul Jr. married to Maria (Briscione); Philip; and Kayla. Also survived by many loving nieces and nephews.
Merle was a graduate of Greater Johnstown High School. A US Navy Veteran of WWII, Merle served from 1943-1946 in the Pacific Theater. He was a long time firefighter with the Johnstown Fire Department and retired as Assistant Fire Chief. Merle was a member of the International Association of Firefighters.
He was a longtime parishioner of St. Clare of Assisi Parish, formerly St. Anthony, Woodvale where he was also a member of the Holy Name Society. Merle was a loving and devoted husband, father, and grandfather who will be sadly missed. Friends received from 4 to 7 p.m. on Monday, September 18, 2017 at Frank Duca Funeral Home, Westmont Chapel, 1622 Menoher Blvd. Johnstown PA 15905. A Funeral Mass will be held at on Tuesday, September 19, 2017 at 10:00 am. at St. Clare of Assisi Parish. Fr. Matthew Misurda. Interment, St. Anthony Cemetery, Geistown.
