Susan is preceded in death by her husband of 32 years, Lewis Rodgers Mapes; daughter, Mary Beth Durst; and son, Patrick Thomas Mapes. Susan is survived by her children David Mapes and wife, Beth; James Mapes; Linda Whorton and husband, Robert; Rebecca Mapes; Stephen Mapes and wife, Dawn; Timothy Mapes and wife, Roxann; Patricia Madey and husband, Richard; Margaret Critchfield and husband, John; and Christopher Mapes. Susan was the daughter of Joseph and Gertrude Billetdeoux; and sister to Donald of Ebensburg; and had many nieces and nephews. Susan was a graduate of Johnstown Catholic High School and Seton Hill College with a nursing degree. She worked briefly at Somerset Community Hospital until becoming a homemaker and a mother to 11 children. She had a tremendous love for her entire family. Susan was a devout Catholic, and member of St. Peter's Catholic Church , who lived a faith-filled life. Susan was the past president of the Somerset Practical Nursing Program. She had many close friends throughout her life who she cared about deeply including the members of the card club and First of May celebrations. Susan had many wonderful neighbors who provided her with friendship over the years. Susan was an avid reader who shared her love of reading with others by always sharing her books with them. You would often find her sitting on her front porch on a warm summer day reading a novel. In later years she got a lot of enjoyment from feeding the rabbits, squirrels, and chipmunks from her back porch. Her love of flowers was evident as her house was surrounded by them for her to enjoy during the summer months. She lived for family trips to Bethany and Myrtle Beaches. She also enjoyed sending cards to friends, family, and sometimes strangers for birthdays or to send a newspaper clipping she took out of the paper. She was a huge Pittsburgh Steelers and Penguins' fan. She was the biggest fan of her children and grandchildren while she watched them play in many sports throughout her life. The family wants to thank the staff at The Patriot, but especially those that took care of her on the 1st and 3rd floors. She was given very loving care by those who took care of her and the family is forever grateful to them. Friends will be received at the Miller Funeral Home on Friday, December 7, 2018 from 2 to 7 pm. A funeral mass will be held on Saturday, December 8, 2018 at 11:00 a.m. at St. Peter's Catholic Church.
