Vera's Story

92, of Ebensburg, passed away peacefully on Thursday, May 18, 2017 at Ligonier Gardens. Vera was born September 23, 1924 in Belsano, daughter of the late Walter and Mary Jane (Johnson) Michaels. She was preceeded in death by her husband of 61 years, Donald L. Stophel on Nov. 7, 2008; her infant brother, Phillip; and brother, Wayne Michaels. Survived by children: Jane "Snooks" Cook of Murrysville; Patricia Ann Lambertson of Oklahoma; Donald Lynn (Vicki) Stophel of Belsano; Leona Vie (Joseph) Hodson of McMurray; six grand-children and eight great grandchildren. Also survived by her sister, Vie Kelly of Geistown. Vera was an active member of the Belsano Faith United Methodist Church, where she served as the church pianist for well over 71 years and taught Sunday School. She was a devoted wife and mother, she enjoyed crocheting and reading in her pass time. Vera was also well known in the area as a talented piano teacher, giving lessons from her home to students as well as to her own children. She retired from Rural Electric, where she worked as the payroll clerk. Friends will be received from 2-4 and 6-8 p.m., Sunday at the Askew-Houser Funeral Homes, Inc., Ebensburg; where a funeral service will be held at 11 a.m. Monday, the Rev. Clayton Harriger, officiating. Interment at United Brethren Cemetery in Belsano. In lieu of flowers, contributions in her memory may be made to the Ligonier Gardens Personal Care & Retirement - Bethlen Communities, 125 Kalassy Drive, Ligonier, Pa. 15658:
