Charles's Story

Charles L. Jr., MD, 89, a resident of Indian River Esates, Vero Beach, Florida, where he died June 17, 2017. Born Sept. 4, 1927 in Phoenixville, Pennsylvania, he was the eldest son of Charles L. Hunsberger Sr. and Phyllis M. (Kimmel) Hunsberger. He grew up in Philadelphia, a graduate of Frankford High School, and an Eagle Scout. Graduate of Gettysburg College and member of Beta Beta Beta and Phi Beta Kappa Honor Societies and Alpha Tau Omega. Volunteered for the US Army at age 18 (ROTC) and served as a PFC at Fort Meade as a Lab Tech. Graduate of Temple University Medical School, member of Alpha Omega Alpha Medical Honor Society. Completed his Internship at Conemaugh Valley Memorial Hospital in 1953. Established a family practice in Geistown and practiced general medicine at Windber Hospital until 1959. Completed residency at the Scheie Eye Institute Dept. of Ophthalmology, University of Pennsylvania and completed a retinal fellowship at Wills Eye Hospital. Began practicing Ophthalmology in Johnstown in 1962 and became a founding partner of Ophthalmic Associates in 1969 which became known as the "MASH" group (Maravalli, Ashman, Sivulich, Hunsberger). Served on staff at CVMH, member of the Academy of Ophthalmology, PA Academy of Ophthalmology, PA Medical Society, Cambria County Medical Society. Charles retired in 1993 spending his winters in Stuart Florida and summers in Johnstown. An accomplished piano and organ player, enjoyed handball, tennis, and golf. He enjoyed practicing medicine in Johnstown and raising his family here. Preceded in death by parents, loving wife of 54 years, Miriam M. (McConkey) Hunsberger, brother Donald Hunsberger, and granchildren Alison Hunsberger, Sarah Wagner, Simon Hunsberger. Survived by children - Richard Hunsberger, Vero Beach, FL; Lori Hunsberger, Chadds Ford, PA; Lynn, wife of Thomas Dougherty, Dallas, PA; Susan, wife of Edward Wagner, Johnstown; and Jeffrey Hunsberger married to Michelle Legere, Eden Mills, VT; and granchildren: Mark and Eric Hunsberger; Isabel Hunsberger; Brendan and Erin Dougherty; Matthew, Jonathan and Julia Wagner; and Sophie Hunsberger. He was a member of the Westmont Presbyterian Church and the Mariner Sands Chapel, Stuart, FL, where he and Miriam sang in the Choir. Charles will be greatly missed by all who were privileged to have known him. A memorial service will be held Tuesday, July 11, at 11:00 a.m. at Westmont Presbyterian Church, Rev.
