Dixie's Story

Dixie L. Hurt, 69, of Ligonier, died Monday, October 9, 2017 in Excela Health Latrobe Hospital. She was born August 23, 1948 in Windber, a daughter of the late Wayne T. and Ruth Hanna Freidline. Prior to her retirement in 2004 she had been employed as a fourth grade educator for the Ligonier Valley School District for 34 years. She loved her students and missed them dearly after her retirement. Dixie graduated from Ligonier Valley High School, where she had been a majorette, in 1966 and earned her degree in elementary education from her beloved Ashland University in 1970. She earned her Master's degree from Indiana University of Pennsylvania. At Ashland she was a pom-pom girl for the men's basketball team, was the athletes choice for Homecoming Queen, and was a charter member of the Alpha Phi Sorority. Dixie enjoyed golfing and socializing at Champion Lakes Gold Course with owners Dick Groat and Jerry Lynch. She looked forward to traveling the United States to attend her father's Marine Corps Reunions. She loved spending time traveling to the Caribbean and looked forward to attending the Ashland University Homecomings. She is survived by her loving husband of 44 years, Charles E. Hurt, a sister, Sandra L. (Robert) Johnson of Ligonier, and a nephew, David (Noelle) Johnson of Brooklyn, NY. Dixie's friends and family will gather together Thursday from 2-4 and 6-8PM at the J. Paul McCracken Funeral Chapel, Inc., 144 East Main Street, Ligonier. A service to celebrate her life will be held Friday at 9:00AM at St. James Evangelical Lutheran Church with her pastor, The Rev. Paul Poerschke officiating. (PLEASE GO DIRECTLY TO THE CHURCH). Interment will follow in the Ligonier Valley Cemetery.
