James's Story

James Benjamin Johnson, age 88, of Mechanicsburg, passed away on Saturday, September 2, 2017 at his home surrounded by his loved ones. Born August 19, 1929 in Johnstown, he was the son of the late Robert and Helen (Horning) Johnson.
James began a career in journalism as a reporter with the Johnstown Tribune Democrat before joining the McKeesport Daily News. While at the Daily News, he rose from the ranks of reporter to eventually serve as editor of photography as well as city and business sections. James also worked in the PA State Senate Democratic Press Office where he was tasked with writing speeches, summaries of bills and legislation to be introduced, and press releases. He enjoyed giving of his time to various service organizations, most notably with the local Kiwanis and Rotary clubs. In his free time, he enjoyed reading, was an avid Pittsburgh sports fan, and was a frequent patron of the former Golden Sheaf Restaurant at the Harrisburg Hilton. Additionally, he was a member of Trindle Spring Lutheran Church and was an animal lover who supported many local animal rescue organizations.
James was preceded in death by his wife of 58 years, Lois (Berkey) Johnson and his five siblings, Robert, Betty, Dorothy, Ruth, and Eleanor. Surviving is his son, Bruce Johnson of Wheat Ridge, CO; his daughter Linda Johnson and wife Shelagh Byrne of Philadelphia; his grandson, Joseph James Johnson; as well as numerous nieces and nephews.
Memorial services will be held at 3:00 PM Saturday, October 7 at Malpezzi Funeral Home, 8 Market Plaza Way, Mechanicsburg, where there will be a visitation from 1:00 to 3:00 PM. Interment will take place privately in Trindle Spring Cemetery.
