Joseph Ward Kiser was born as one of a triplet of boys in a one-room schoolhouse on April 12, 1935 in Central City, PA. He died unexpectedly on Thursday, June 22, 2017 in Louisville, KY in the hospital awaiting a minor bladder procedure. He was preceded in death by his parents Walter Theodore and Mary Audrey Nail Kiser, his brother Robert B. Kiser, his first wife Carol Reather Kiser (1964) and beloved wife of 50 years, Judy Baker Kiser (2016). Surviving him are his sister Beatrice K. Blettner (Bradenton, FL) and his triplet brothers James L. and John A. Kiser (Johnstown, PA) and their families. Grieving with them are his daughter and grandson Sarah K. Lawson and Matthew J. Parrish; his son and daughter-in-law, Paul J. and Jennifer B. Kiser and their daughters Kaitlyn M. and Kayleigh N. Kiser along with "middle child" and dear friend, Martin F. Sherman.
Joseph served in the US Navy and was honorably discharged in 1957. He graduated from Gettysburg College in 1961 and from the Gettysburg Lutheran Theological Seminary. He was ordained as a Lutheran Pastor in 1964. He worked faithfully in service to the Lord for 53 years in Lutheran churches in PA, VA, IN, KY and FL.
As a mentor and friend, Joe was also instrumental in shepherding many others to follow him in his Lutheran ministry. An enthusiastic historian, Joe loved to travel and experience the locations of historic events he had studied. He shared this joy with others as a devoted volunteer at Historic Locust Grove, Louisville, KY. He was an outspoken advocate of LGBTQ rights in society at-large and within the ministry, including ordination and marriage within the Church.
A memorial service and committal of his ashes will be held on Sunday, July 30th at 12:30PM at All Saints Lutheran Church, 7875 W. McNab Rd, Tamarac, FL. In lieu of flowers, please send gifts to Third Lutheran Church, 1864 Frankfort Ave, Louisville, KY 40206.
