Sylvester's Story

Sweetie 95; Johnstown, died at home on June 26, 2017. Born June 27, 1921 in Johnstown, son of Stevo and Kata (Hrkman) Saula. He is the last surviving member of his immediate family. Preceded in death by parents; wife Barbara (Turjan) Saula; brother, Daniel Saula and sisters, Zora Duckovich, Natalie Papaila and Olga Jendricks. He is survived by special cousins, Milan Saula, Nick Saula (Emma) and Mary K. (Saula) Kelly (Bill); sister-in-law, Janet Turjan and numerous loving nieces, nephews, great-nieces and great-nephews. Special friends, Mary Lou Oyler, Evelyn Dimphl and Robert Shahade. He was a W.W. II Navy veteran serving as commissioned officer aboard the U.S.S. Quincy. While serving on the Quincy, he was privileged to be a small part of history by witnessing the Yalta Treaty and by seeing President Roosevelt, Churchill and Stalin. He retired from the Navy, after 20 plus years as a Lt. Commander. He was a business manager for the Johnstown School District for many years. He also taught economics at Washington and Jefferson University. He served on the board of the Johnstown Water Authority for over 30 years. He was a lifelong member and past president of St. Nicholas Serbian Orthodox Church. He loved his pets and was an avid animal lover. Family and friends wish to give special thanks to his loving caretakers, who made it possible to spend his final years at home. Also, special thanks to Dr. Leech and his staff, for the care and affection they provided. Anyone wishing to make a memorial donation may do so to St. Nicholas Serbian Orthodox Church, or the Humane Society. Friends received Friday, from 2 to 8 p.m. at the Francis G. Ozog Funeral Home Inc., Broad Street where a brief service will be held Saturday at 9:30 a.m. followed by Funeral Service at 10:00 a.m. at the St. Nicholas Serbian Orthodox Church, Fr. Dragan Zaric officiating. Committal will take place at Grandview Cemetery. Pomen will be held 7:00 p.m. Friday at the funeral home. Condolences may be made at fgozogfuneralhome.com
