William's Story

age 85 of Indiana, died Thursday, June 29, 2017 at the Indiana Regional Medical Center. He was born in 1931 in Avonmore to Geroge William and Gladys Matilda Harrison Culp. Dr. Culp was a member of various counseling and psychological associations including the American and Pennsylvania Counseling Associations, the Transpersonal Psychology Assoc., and the American and Pennsylvania Psychological Associations. He was also a member of the American Legion, the VFW Post #1989, and the LOOMoose. A veteran of the Korean War, he served in the US Navy. Dr. Culp graduated from IUP in 1957 with a B.S. in Mathematics Education. Upon his return from service in the Korean Conflict, Dr. Culp pursued his interests in psychology and counseling, completing an M.S. at Southern Illinois University and an Ed.D. at West Virginia University. He taught at IUP in the Counselor Education program from 1975 until his retirement in 1993. Dr. Culp opened a transpersonal retreat center, Intraconnections, near Delmont , Pa., and has served as president of the Pennsylvania Association for Spiritual, Ethical, and Religious Values in Counseling. In addition, Dr. Culp was well published in a variety of psychological and counseling journals. Surviving are one niece and one nephew, Brenda Gerheim May, (Ron), Hanover VA; Vince Gerheim, (Birgit), The Villages, FL. He was preceded in death by his parents and by his sister, Avaunell Culp-Gerheim. Friends will be received on Wednesday from 3 to 7 p.m. at the Bowser-Minich Funeral Home, Indiana, where a funeral service will be held Thursday at 11 a.m. Interment will be made in the West View Cemetery, Avonmore.
