Donald L. Stewart Obituary
95, of Fairfield Township, patriarch of a large and loving family, died Wednesday, September 28, 2016. He was born January 26, 1921, in Oakmont, a son of the late Andrew and Bessie (Merrill) Stewart. He was raised in Oakmont, where he met the love of his life, Margaret Elizabeth Lelliott Stewart. Donald enlisted in the Army Air Corps in January 1942 and eventually became a pilot, flying both B-26 and A-26 bombers. After the war, he and Margaret were wed October 30, 1945. In addition to flying, Donald had always dreamed of being a farmer. In 1955 the family moved to a 164-acre dairy farm in Fairfield Township where their family eventually grew to nine children. A bricklayer by trade, Donald for many years was superintendent of construction for Chemsteel Construction Co., running jobs in steel mills across the country. Donald was a member of the American Legion Post 128, Bolivar and the Laurel Valley Senior Citizens Centers. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his loving wife, Margaret, on July 30, 2006; an infant son, Herbert; and siblings Mildred, Dorothy, Gussy, Merrill, Edward and Robert. He is survived by nine children, Donald L. Jr. (and Kathy), of Unity Township; Andrew, of Oviedo, FL; Sally (and Sam) Saxton, of Fairfield Township; Tom (and Donna), of Hempfield Township; Matthew (and Natalie) of Westford, Mass.; Bert (and Pam), of Fairfield Township; Ellen (and Tom) Feeney, of Oviedo, FL; Jim of North Huntingdon Township; and John (and Karen), of Fairfield Township; 15 grandchildren, Donald L. Stewart III, Brian (and Chrissy), Amy (and John) Toth, Sam (and Yvette) Saxton, Suzann (and Jason) Roberts, Sara (and Doug) Ivanac, Scott Saxton, Jessica (and Eric) Leuthold, Tom Stewart, Alexandra Stewart, Tom and Sean Feeney, and Bo, Ty and Trent Stewart; 13 great-grandchildren: Maggie Stewart, Sofia Stewart, Elijah and Ben Toth, Conner, Garret and Maggie Saxton, Callum, Nathaniel and Alexander Roberts, Gabriella, Elizabeth and Douglas Ivanac. Family and friends will be received from 5-7p.m. Saturday and 12-4p.m. Sunday, at the SNYDER FUNERAL HOME INC., 402 East Church Street, Ligonier, Pa 15658. A funeral service will be held at 10 a.m. Monday in the chapel of the funeral home with the Rev. James B. Simons officiating. Interment will follow in the Ft. Palmer Cemetery, Bolivar. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to Laurel Valley Senior Citizens Centers, PO Box 366, New Florence, PA 15944.
