Dorothy Mae Kurash Obituary

Gallitzin Twp., PA - 87, of Vampire Road in Gallitzin Township, passed away on July 3, 2025, at home. Born on July 9, 1937, in Lilly, daughter of the late Steve and Eva (Pollick) Shedlock of Lilly. Preceded in death by her devoted husband of 48 years, Richard Kurash, whom she married in 1961 at St Brigid's Catholic Church in Lilly. Also preceded in death by siblings, Thomas (Iris) Shedlock of Michigan and Jean (Ronald) Wilk of Cresson.

Dorothy leaves behind a loving family who will dearly miss her presence: Her son, Brian Kurash (LeeAnn Minor), of Fredericksburg, Pa., and daughter, Jody Kurash (late Glenn Sovisto), of Bali, Indonesia. She was immensely proud of her grandsons, Samuel and Parker Kurash, who followed in her footsteps with a passion for entrepreneurship, establishing their own company, Kurb (Kurash Boys) Appeal, in Fredericksburg. Also survived by brothers: William (Julie) Shedlock, of New Jersey, and Patrick "Bud" Shedlock, of Lilly, and sisters: Patricia (Dennis) Eckenrode, of Cresson, and Sonja (Jake) Stein, of Altoona, as well as numerous nieces and nephews.

For 40 years, Dorothy was the proud owner and operator of her own beauty salon, retiring in 2007. Her dedication and warm personality earned her the affection of many loyal customers. Beyond her professional life, Dorothy found immense joy in the simple pleasures. Her countryside home was her sanctuary, where she meticulously tended to her gardens and landscaping.

One of her most treasured activities was her weekly luncheon group with her sister, Patricia, and dear friends, Mary Harker and Becky Yogas, where laughter and camaraderie filled the air. Dorothy also embraced the opportunity to travel, visiting family near and far, and embarking on several memorable international trips with her daughter. She was an active and engaged member of her community: A dedicated member of the Cresson Volunteer Fire Company's Ladies Auxiliary and generously volunteered her time at the St. Francis Xavier Church bingo. An avid bowler, she enjoyed the friendly competition of various local bowling leagues.

Friends and family are invited to pay their respects at Gibbons Funeral Home, 301 Church St. Gallitzin, on Monday, July 7, where a visitation will be held from 6 p.m. until 8 p.m. A Funeral Mass will be held at St. Francis Xavier Church, Cresson, on Tuesday, July 8, at 10 a.m., with committal to follow at St. Francis Xavier Cemetery.

In lieu of flowers, the family kindly requests that donations may be made to Conemaugh Regional Hospice, who provided compassionate care to Dorothy in her final days. Dorothy's kindness, spirited nature, and unwavering love for her family and friends will be deeply missed by all who had the privilege of knowing her. May she rest in eternal peace.
