Penn Hills, PA - Passed peacefully, age 96, in her Penn Hills home surrounded by her loving family. A devoted mother, grandmother, sister, aunt and daughter, Dorothy was born in Hollsopple, PA. Survived by her son Raymond T. Ramos (husband David M. Douds), daughter Beverly Ramos Heller (husband Skip Heller), grandchildren Nicole Marie Heller and Tyson Antonio Heller, siblings Mary Peachey, Martha Helmuth (husband Maynard Kurtz), David Harshberger (wife Joyce), Carol Mellinger and numerous loved nieces, nephews and great nieces and nephews. Predeceased by her beloved husband of 62 years, Antonio Ramos, Jr., parents Erwin and Trella (Eash) Harshberger, siblings Mildred Blucas, Lois Cable, Paul Harshberger, and Lester (Pete) Harshberger. Dorothy lived a life of service to others. As a lifelong member of the Mennonite Church, she taught Sunday School, was an MYF sponsor, cooked countless meals for funerals and weddings, participated in sewing circles, served on the Pastoral Care and Mutual Aid committees. Dorothy and Tony spent 4 years in Voluntary Service at Eastern Mennonite University, Harrisonburg, VA. She was Guesthouse Hostess; he was Night Supervisor on Maintenance. Dorothy was an organizing member for the Westmoreland County Foodbank Program called "Fresh Express" at Scottdale Mennonite Church. She volunteered as a census taker and for Head Start at the beginning of its existence in the Scottdale community. For 6 years she and Tony lived at Greencroft Retirement Community in Goshen, IN. While there she was on the Resident Advisory Board. Over the journey of her life, she befriended many persons of all ages. She served as a listening ear, mentor, and spiritual counselor. Her life was an example of aging without losing the joy of living and learning. Her curiosity was unbounded. As her final act of love, faith and service, Dorothy donated her body for medical research through Humanity Gifts Registry. Dorothy loved life and was never bored. She hand-pieced and quilted hundreds of quilts in her lifetime. She enjoyed bird watching, crocheting, word search, painting by numbers, puzzling and cooking. A special joy was keeping in touch with family and friends throughout the country and the world by letter and phone. The front porch of her long-time home in Scottdale, PA was a neighborhood gathering spot for hours of conversation and laughter. Her passing is a great loss to her family and numerous friends.
