James J. Lisankis Obituary

Lisankis - James J. "Jim," born on May 24, 1928, in Nilan, PA, to the late Paul Hepplet and Anna Lisankis, peacefully passed away on April 18, 2024, in Johnstown, PA. He was a kind and welcoming soul whose presence will be deeply missed by all who had the pleasure of knowing him.


Jim proudly served in the U.S. Navy with the Fleet Aircraft Service Squadron 5 at NAS Oceana, Virginia. His dedication to his country was unwavering, and his service is a testament to his selflessness and commitment.


A man of many talents and accomplishments, Jim excelled in various aspects of his life. He was a proud alumnus of West Virginia University in Morgantown, WV. Jim's proudest accomplishments included being a devoted member, Deacon and Elder of the Ligonier Covenant Presbyterian Church. He was also actively involved in the community as a member of the Ligonier Rotary Club for over 25 years, including serving as President. He was also a member of the Laughlintown Protection Association,


His contributions extended beyond the local community as a dedicated member of Mount Moriah Lodge #28 F&AM; of Bordentown, NJ. Jim was an active member of the Valley Players, both behind the scenes and onstage. Additionally, he generously volunteered his time to deliver meals for Ligonier Meals on Wheels until he was 89 years young.


Throughout his career, Jim worked at Westinghouse, United States Steel at Fairless Works in Falls Township, Bucks County Pa., Worcester Works in Worcester, Mass., Joliet Works in Joliet IL., and Southern Plating and Machinery of Anniston AL. In 1972, Jim started the American Steel Service Company in Windber, Pa.


In his personal life, Jim was cherished by his surviving family members: daughter, Betty A. (James) Vardy, of Duck NC; daughter, Joan B. Hoobler (Jeffrey Craig), of Ligonier Pa.; son, Jim B. (Jill), of Johnstown Pa.; daughter, Luci L. (Todd) Wagner, of Johnstown Pa.; grandson, Nathan (Kate) Hoobler, of Arlington, Va.; granddaughter, Abby (Daniel) Meller, of Virginia Beach Va., as well as Otto, Iona; and James Hoobler (great-grandchildren) and numerous nieces, nephews and cousins.


Jim is preceded in death by his beloved wife, Joan B. Lisankis, and siblings, Agnes, Verna, Frank, Anthony, Elizabeth and Donald. His memory will forever live on in the hearts of those who knew him.


The visitation to honor Jim will take place at Snyder-Green Funeral Home in 402 E. Church St. Ligonier, Pa. on Thursday, April 25, 2024, from 3 p.m. to 7 p.m. following the visitation at 7 p.m. a Masonic Service and Military Honors to take place. A Memorial Service will take place at Covenant Presbyterian Church on Friday April 26, 2024, starting at 11 a.m. A Private Interment will take place in Grandview Cemetery, Johnstown Pa.

Jim J. Lisankis will be remembered not only for his remarkable achievements, but also for his warm spirit that touched the lives of many. May he rest in peace knowing that his legacy will continue to inspire generations to come.
