Conemaugh, PA - Schatz - James L "Pappy," 87, East Conemaugh, passed away at Windber Woods on January 8, 2026. Born November 25, 1938, in Johnstown to the late John Makins and was adopted into the Schatz family as a newborn. Preceded in death by his loving wife, Alice "Tootie" Schatz; daughter, Ellen "Robin" Schatz; and grandson, Jimmy Schatz. Also preceded in death by sisters, Beverly Reighard and Dale Wadsworth, and brothers, John "Jack" Makins and Christopher "Allen" Makins. He is survived by his children, Charlie (Natalie) Schatz, Jamie (Donald) Keim, Cheryl (Dan) Rorabaugh, James Jr (Jodie) Schatz and Robert Schatz, all of Johnstown. James had 12 grandchildren, 17 great-grandchildren and numerous nieces and nephews. James was a proud veteran of the United States Army. After being honorably discharged, he went to work at Conemaugh Hospital, where he later retired. While working at the hospital he was known as the "key man." After retirement he went on to drive school bus for Mlakers Transportation, where the students lovingly called him Pappy. James was a very proud family man and was so unbelievably proud of all his children's accomplishments. He enjoyed spending time with his loved ones, especially when they were camping and riding motorcycles. He was a devoted husband and was by Tootie's side until she passed January 13, 2024. In his later years, he enjoyed supporting his great-grandchildren and would often be seen cheering them on at hockey, baseball and softball games, as well as gymnastics and swim meets. He enjoyed dancing and spoke often of his dances with friend Vikki at Senior Life. James was known to always have a mischievous sparkle in his eye, a bright smile and a contagious laugh. You couldn't meet him and not fall in love. He will be missed terribly. A private celebration of life will be held at a later date.
