SZPALA – James M. “Uncle Jimmy,” 64, Gallitzin, died June 10, 2012, at his home. Born Oct. 3, 1947, in Gallitzin, son of the late Alvin and Julia (Lesko) Szpala. Survived by brother, Ronald (Nancy), Cresson; nieces and nephews, Patricia (Ron) Biter, Rhonda Simanski, Lanette (Darren) Johnston, Ronald Jr. (Kim), Michael (Jennifer, Maureen (Ted) Jones, Adam (Jennifer), Joy (Charles) Gill, Jeff (Traci) and Matthew (John Shirk); great-nephew and godson, Ashton Buck; special cousins, Ann Golden and Mary and Russ Knee, both of Gallitzin; and numerous other nieces, nephews and grandnieces and -nephews. He worked for JC Penny, Altoona, as a supervisor in the men’s department and was well liked by his co-workers. A 1965 graduate of Gallitzin High School. Member of Gallitzin Borough Council and a zoning hearing board and Democratic Committeemen. Board member of Gallitzin Library, member of Gallitzin Area Tourist Council and volunteered at the museum. Member of Loyal Order of Moose and volunteered in many community activities. Also a member of St. Demetrius Parish, where funeral Mass will be celebrated at 10 a.m. Friday, the Rev. Albert Ledoux, celebrant. Committal, St. Mary’s Cemetery. Friends will be received from 2 to 4 and 6 to 8 p.m. Thursday at Gibbons Funeral Home, 301 Church St., Gallitzin, where vigil service will be held Thursday. (www.gibbonsfunerals.com)
