John J. Kodosky Obituary

94 of Lilly was called to eternal rest on the eve of January 6th, 2019 at UPMC Altoona. He was born January 2, 1925 in Gallitzin and was the son of the late Joseph and Mary Kodsky. Surviving are his brother Robert Kodosky, and two sisters: Mary Savukas and husband C. Ray and Anna Wozniak and husband George along with numerous nieces and nephews. Proceeded in death by brothers Stanley and Frank as well as his great niece Ashley Myers. Though John was a graduate of Lilly High School, he was drafted by the military before his graduation ceremony; serving in WWII as both a gunner and radioman on a B-17 bomber in Europe. Upon returning from his tour of duty, he went to barber school. He worked in Hollidaysburg at the Conrail Car Shops until retirement. John was a member of Our Lady of the Alleghenies Parish. John had a true love for music which inspired him to become a self-taught musician; playing the piano but the violin was the instrument that tugged at his heartstrings. Over the decades, he spent countless evenings playing his violin flawlessly to familiar tunes, especially polkas. As opportunities arose, John would also play his violin alongside his nieces and nephews to ensure they decorously practiced their own musical instruments. John even provided violin lessions to his great niece, Ashley, who fostered a similar appreciation of music, leading her to join the Johnstown Youth Symphony. John had a constant yearning to learn, seeking much knowledge from reading a multitude of books and magazines. He enjoyed speaking Polish and would do so as often as he could. He made much effort to keep up with local and national current events: astonished by the changes that occured over his lifespan. In addition, he was an avid gardener and dedicated each spring and summer to planting, pruning and maintaining his vegetable gardens. He was also a baseball enthusiast and was intrigued by the successes of the Altoona Curve and remained a very dedicated Pittsburgh Pirate fan; tuning in to each and every baseball game from the comfort of his kitchen table. He will be remembered as a dear brother, and very kind uncle; a humble fellow who was a realist and an observer; traits that cultivated his very simple and practical approach to life's journey. Family and friends received on Wednesday January 9, 2019 from 4pm to 7pm at the Thomas F. Cloherty Funeral Home, Lilly where a vigil service will be held. Funeral Mass will be celebrated Thursday January 10, 2019 at 10am, at Our Lady of The Alleghenies Chapel, Lilly. Father Kevin Queally, celebrant. Committal in Our Lady of Mount Carmel Cemetery, Lilly. Military rites by Lilly American Legion and Lilly V.F.W.
