"Ice Cream Joe", 79, of Ligonier, died on October 3, 2016, at the Bethlen Home. He was born on June 12, 1937, the son of the late Joseph F. Greubel and Veronica Connolly Greubel. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his brother, John R. Greubel. Joseph is survived by his wife of 54 years, Virginia Kabala Greubel, and three daughters, Margaret Murren of Ligonier, Melissa ( Corey) Blystone of Ligonier, and Mary Jo (Christian) Sell of Bellefonte, PA. He is also survived by twelve grandchildren and several nieces and nephews. Joe was the President of the Valley Dairy Restaurants from 1989 to 2009, and Chairman of the Board and spokesperson for the Valley Dairy Restaurants in the persona of Ice Cream Joe until his death. He inherited the role of Ice Cream Joe from his father who founded the family business. In 2015, he was awarded the Latrobe Community Service Award, and at the presentation it was proclaimed October 26th as Ice Cream Joe Day. In 1984, he was named president of the National Ice Cream Retailers Association, and presided over the 50th anniversary of the association. His life was devoted to business and he cherished the numerous friends and acquaintances he made throughout his career. Joe graduated from the University of Pittsburgh in 1959, was president of the Westmoreland County Pitt Alumni Association for numerous years, and a longtime member of the Advisory Board at the University of Pittsburgh/Greensburg. He received an honorable discharge from the United States Army Reserve in 1966, and was a lifetime member of B.P.O. Elks #907. Joe had a terrific sense of humor and quick wit, and loved to make people smile, always ready with a joke or funny story. Family and friends will be received from 2 to 4 and 6 to 8 p.m. Wednesday at the SNYDER FUNERAL HOME INC., 402 East Church Street, Ligonier. A funeral Mass will be held at 10 a.m. Thursday at Holy Trinity Church, Ligonier, PA with the Rev. John Foriska as celebrant. Private Entombment will be held in the St. Vincent Mausoleum, Latrobe PA.
