KUSH – Joseph J. “Joe Gunda,” 76, Windber, went to be with his wife of 34 years on June 10, 2012, at home surrounded by his loving daughters. Born March 6, 1936, in Windber, son of Thadeus and Anna (Hancharick) Kush. Preceded in death by parents and wife, Ileen Mary (Fetsko) Kush. Survived by daughters, Kristine M., wife of Kevin L. Michaels, Johnstown; Kathleen A., wife of Mark McCreery, Northern Cambria; Kimberly M., wife of Matthew Deardorff, Harrisburg; Judith E. Kush, Columbia, S.C.; and Elizabeth M., wife of Steven Smitley, Johnstown; and grandchildren, Emma Ileen Smitley and unborn baby Smitley; Tyler Joseph McCreery; and Jackson Lon Deardorff. Brother of Dorothy, wife of Michael Salay, Colorado; Thaddeus Kush, Delaware; and Louise, wife of Dr. John Pawlowicz, Butler. Also survived by sister-in-law, Michalene Tomko; and brother-in-law, Michael Fetsko, both of Johnstown; and numerous nieces and nephews. A U.S. Army veteran of the Korean–Vietnam era. While in the Army, Joe played for the 1960 undefeated Eighth U.S. Army champion, The Cavaliers. Retired physical education teacher from Blacklick Valley School District. Member of Windber Polish-American Educational Association, where Joe bartended for many years. Also a member of Juniata Sportsmen’s Club. Joe loved his family. He enjoyed Tuesday night dinners with his daughters and sisters-in-law, road trips with his family, and more than anything, spending time with his grandchildren. Member of SS. Cyril & Methodius Catholic Church, Windber, where funeral Mass will be celebrated at 2 p.m. Thursday, the Rev. George M. Gulash. Committal, St. John Cantius Catholic Cemetery, Windber. Friends received from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. Wednesday at William Kisiel Funeral Home, Windber. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Windber Hospice in Joe’s memory. “We love and miss you something fierce.”
