Mary Charney
Mary Charney, 90, originally from Richland Township, born March 19, 1929, died in Summerfield, Fla. on Saturday, September 28, 2019. She was born in Mine 37 in Windber and had many tales to tell about being the youngest of 12 children (she was always so proud to be in a family of six boys and six girls!) and living in the shadow of the mining tipple. Mary married Michael Charney in 1950 and had one daughter, Debee. Mary was preceded in death by all 11 of her siblings, her parents Esther (Vajda) and Zigmond Molnar, and her husband, Michael. Mary was an accomplished businesswoman operating her own hair salon in an era when not many women owned businesses. She loved doing hair and was the best colorist in the area! She had many customers, ranging from centenarians to young children. Oakridge Drive received its name due to Mary and her clientele. She worried that no one would find her if the street remained an RD 2. She enjoyed being social, was a good bowler and even tried golf for a short time. She and her husband built a beautiful home in Richland and loved having large holiday dinners with family and friends.
Mary is survived by her daughter, Debee, married to Wayne Goller (Florida); her granddaughter Casey, married to Tom DelliCarpini (New York); great-grandchildren Meaghan (Maryland), Xavier and Claudia (New York), as well as by her extended family, Brandon Goller, married to Bethann Zett and their four children (Georgia), and Richard Goller, married to Casey Staib and their two children (Maryland) . Condolences can be expressed via e-mail to and Mary's bright eyes and happy smile will be missed. Services will be private.
