HAYES – Robert D. “Pappy Bob,” 79, Geistown, died June 8, 2011, at UPMC Presbyterian, Pittsburgh. Born May 30, 1932, in Paint Township, son of the late Robert H. and Thelma M. (Wirick) Hayes. Also preceded in death by mother- and father-in-law, Frank and Eileen (Cronin) Ruff; and sister-in-law, Beverly Ruff Dziki. Survived by wife of 56 years, Dennice (Ruff) Hayes; daughter, Annie Hayes, Geistown; son, Robert H. Hayes II, Geistown; and grandchildren, Mark Robert Hayes and Robert Tyler Hayes, both of Johnstown. Brother of P. James, married to the former Denise L. (Weaver), Geistown; and brother-in-law, Joseph Dziki, Westmont. Also survived by nieces, nephews and many close cousins. A 1950 graduate of Johnstown High School. He was a sergeant in U.S. Marine Corps, First Marines, 7th Regiment, C Company. Korean War veteran with two tours and a Purple Heart recipient. Received a bachelor of science degree from the University of Pittsburgh and a master’s degree in industrial arts from St. Francis University. Retired with 36 years of service at Johnstown Plant, Bethlehem Steel Corp., mostly in the industrial engineering department. Member of First Lutheran Church. A devoted husband, father, grandfather, brother, Marine and friend, who enjoyed the outdoors, working with the ground and taking care of his grandchildren, Mook and TyMan. Private visitation and funeral service with the Rev. Eleanor Abarno, officiating. Interment, Richland Cemetery, with military rites by Conemaugh Valley Marine Corps League Detachment 287.
