Shirley Elizabeth Burkey Obituary
Johnstown, PA - BURKEY - Shirley Elizabeth, 84, went to be with the Lord on Sept. 30, 2025. Born March 10, 1941, in Johnstown, PA, she is the only daughter of the late Anna Iona Pearl "Pearl" (Heitzenrater) and Daniel Delison "Tob" Burkey. Shirley was preceded in death by her parents; sister-in-law, Roma Burkey; and niece, Tara Anne Burkey. She is survived by her brothers, Daniel, George (Pat), Robert (Debbie), and Ronald (Darlene), all of Jackson Township, PA. Also surviving and treasuring their memories of her are numerous nieces and nephews who were lucky enough to have a wonderful, playful, caring Aunt like Shirley. A lifelong member of Singer Hill Grace Brethren Church, her church family says Shirley was "the heart and soul of the church." Shirley was devout, artistic, and hard-working, and applied these exceptionally well in her service to God throughout her life. She served for more than 50 years as financial secretary and church treasurer - a full-time job for someone who already had a full-time job, first as a secretary at Acme, then as an employee of the Pennsylvania Department of Welfare in Johnstown. Shirley served in nearly every capacity at the church. She taught and helped organize Sunday school, junior church, and vacation Bible school; sang in the choir, trios, and with the Grace Notes; and single-handedly organized the church's Love Banquet. When she was no longer able to organize the banquet, a team took over and wondered how one person had been able to arrange it so well. For Christmas, Easter, and other special occasions, Shirley created elaborate themes and decorations for Singer Hill Grace Brethren Church. Her church family appreciated Shirley's "special artistic touches," creativity and caring dedication. Most importantly, at the young age of 15, Shirley began teaching Sunday school at Singer Hill Grace Brethren Church. For decades, she faithfully attended church, developed, and taught classes, and led many young people to accept Jesus Christ as their Savior. The children of the church were her children. Many fondly remember Shirley's classroom and delightful teaching style. It was apparent to everyone who knew Shirley that she lived her life for the Lord. Secure in the knowledge she would be with Jesus, she requested no funeral or memorial service be held, and her family is honoring that request.
