84, of Ligonier, formerly of Swissvale and Johnstown, PA, died on March 29, 2017 after a rapid decline due to pulmonary fibrosis. Beloved husband for 60 years to Patricia A. (Robinson) Loughran. Proud father of his seven daughters: Kathryn (Gregory) Cala, Export, PA, Ann (Dennis) Cutrell, Ligonier, PA, Bernadette (Michael) Cala, Alexandria, VA, Mary Jo (Maxine Kane) Loughran, Pittsburgh, PA, Sharon (Edward) Brown, Monongahela, PA, Sheila (Edward) Burgard, Chapel Hill, NC, and Jenifer (Stuart) Selzer, Charlotte, NC. Tom was preceded in death by his parents, John J."Speedo" and Helen D. Loughran and is survived by brothers John D. (Janet) and Dennis (Becky) and sister-in-law Marion. He graduated from St. Vincent College where his basketball team earned national recognition with the George Mikan Award and he was bestowed the Letterman of Distinction Award in 1972. Following his honorable discharge from the U.S. Navy, Tom pursued a career as an insurance adjuster and a Baskin-Robbins franchise owner, but preferred family and fun over work. A self-proclaimed chef, Tom loved playing handball, tennis, golf, and rooting for the Pirates and Steelers. He was founding race director for the Johnstown Marathon, dabbled in amateur theater, and provided lifelong service to the Catholic Church. Known for his sense of humor, "Pap" took great joy in making Friday evening telephone calls to each of his 20 grandchildren: Renee (Josh) Link, Erin (Dan) McGowan, Abigail (Mike) Cala, Zachary (Indianna) Cutrell, Andrew (Katie) Cala, John Cala, Katie (Dan) Loheyde, Hannah Brown, Kevin Cala, Anna Cala, Jacob (Leah) Brown, Megan Cala, Nora Burgard, Noah Brown, Eddie Burgard, Patricia Selzer, Thomas Selzer, Mary Selzer, May Burgard, and Bernadette Selzer. In recent years, he delighted in becoming a great-grandfather to Kaitlyn, Andrew, Benjamin, Lyla, Dylan, Jane, and Maxden. Friends will be received from 2 to 6 p.m. Sunday at the Snyder Funeral Home, Inc., 402 E. Church Street, Ligonier. A Memorial Mass will be celebrated at 10 a.m Monday at the Holy Trinity Catholic Church, Ligonier, with the Rev. John M. Foriska as celebrant. Inurnment will be at the St. Vincent Mausoleum. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to UNC Hospice or a charity of your choice.
