Tina M. (Miller) Honkus Obituary

Hooversville, PA - HONKUS - Tina M. (Miller) "Gigi," 68, of Hooversville, passed away on May 7, 2025, at her home. Born Nov. 29, 1956, in Johnstown. She was preceded in death by her mother, Evelyn (Benna) Miller, and is survived by her loving father, Richard Miller; her devoted husband of 40 years and best friend, Gary "Spook" Honkus; daughter, Kristine Irwin, and her husband JR Irwin; two cherished grandchildren, Jay and Zella Irwin; beloved sisters, Brenda Burnosky, and her husband Kevin, and Tammy Miller-Moore; and loving pet dog, Rocky. Tina embraced life with unwavering determination, compassion, and grace. She was known for her strength - a quiet, steadfast resilience that carried her through every challenge life presented. Her strength, however, was always paired with kindness. Tina's compassion and gentle spirit left a lasting impression on everyone she met, and she made her mark in the most meaningful way: through the lives she touched. She was beloved by all who had the privilege of knowing her. A lifelong learner, Tina pursued personal and professional growth with passion. She was a 1975 graduate of Johnstown Vo-Tech. While working full-time, she completed her education, earning a bachelor's degree from the University of Pittsburgh at Johnstown, and dual master's degrees in business administration and human resources from St. Francis University. She dedicated 38 years of her career to MetLife, rising from the mailroom to the role of vice president of the Human Resource Service Center - a journey that reflected her dedication, work ethic, and leadership. Tina had a deep love for adventure and travel, sharing those experiences with her husband. Together, they explored the world, completing half-marathons in extraordinary locations such as the Great Wall of China, the Galápagos Islands, and New Zealand. Her heart for service was evident in everything she did. Tina was the founder of Wings of Hope of Western PA, a nonprofit that provides financial assistance to individuals battling cancer. She also established a scholarship fund through the organization for students pursuing careers in the medical field. For 18 years, she directed two community races: the Wings of Hope 5K/10K Run and the Great Santa Run, both of which brought people together in the spirit of hope and healing. Tina served on several boards, including the American Red Cross, where she chaired the annual dinner; the Girl Scouts of Western PA; and the Somerset County American Cancer Society. She was lauded for her outstanding contributions to the community by the YWCA's Tribute to Women in 2014 - an honor that reflected the profound impact of her service and leadership. Her tireless volunteerism earned her numerous accolades, including being named Volunteer of the Year by the Cambria Regional Chamber in March 2025, One of Johnstown's Most Beautiful People in 2021, and one of Johnstown Magazine's Most Influential People in 2024. In 2011, her team at MetLife was recognized as a "Great Place to Work," a testament to the culture she helped create. Tina was also a gifted writer and author of two children's books, "Paddy Pancake and Po Pizza," and a memoir, "Pennies of Hope," chronicling her cancer journey. Proceeds from her memoir go toward cancer research - a cause that remained close to her heart. Tina lived far beyond the prognosis given by her doctors, defying expectations with unbreakable spirit and enduring hope. Her legacy is one of strength, love, and grace - a reminder of the impact one life can have when lived with purpose and heart. Donations in Tina's memory may be sent to Wings of Hope of Western PA.
