SMITH – William O. “Bill the Cat,” 40, Millcreek Township, went to be with the Lord after a brief battle with cancer Monday, March 7, 2011, at UPMC Hamot. A gift from God, Bill was born June 11, 1970, in Johnstown, son of Harry W. and E. Thelma Zimmerman Smith. Bill was a graduate of Conemaugh Township High School in Somerset County, Edinboro University and Gonzaga University in Washington. He was owner of the former “Catwalk Music” store in the Liberty Plaza and was employed by UPMC Hamot. He was the business office manager for West Erie Medical Group and also was employed by Tri-State Business Institute as a teacher and instructor. Bill loved spending time with his wife and children watching movies, going for rides, buying video games with his sons, playing “Disney Princess Dress Up” and coloring with his 3-year-old twin daughters. His love of music began in the fourth grade and followed him throughout his life. He played bass guitar with the bands, Houseable Material, Checkmate, Hear No Evil, Geek Army and the M-80’s. He also participated in musicals at Girard High School and the Erie Playhouse. Preceded in death by grandparents, William J. and Mary Jane Smith and William O. Jr. and Clara Belle Selders; and mother-in-law, Imogene M. Anderson. In addition to his parents, survivors include his loving wife of 13 years, Sally J. Anderson Smith; sons, Nicholus J. and Reid W. Smith, both at home; twin daughters, Alexandria M. and Alexis M. Smith, both at home; his loving cat, Riley; his loving sister, Christina M. Smith, Erie; maternal grandmother, Lillian M. Zimmerman, Johnstown; father-in-law, Charles “Chuck” Anderson, Erie; brothers-in-law, John Anderson, Pittsburgh; and Christopher Anderson, and his wife, Bonnie, Erie; sisters-in-law, Janet Pokrywiecki, Waterford; and Jeanne Anderson, Columbus, Ohio; and several uncles, aunts, nieces and nephews, including his uncle, Donald Zimmerman, and his wife, Bettina, Warwick, R.I. Friends and colleagues at West Erie Medical Group and Tri-State Business Institute, and especially his “Brothers from another Mother,” also survive. Friends may call from 2 to 5 and 7 to 9 p.m. Thursday at Russell C. Schmidt & Son Funeral Home Inc., 5000 Wattsburg Road (corner of East Gore Road and Pine Avenue), where service will be held at 1 p.m. Friday. Burial will be private and at the convenience of the family. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions can be made to PNC Bank, 2701 Legion Road, Erie, Pa. 16506, towards a memorial fund for Bill’s children. In addition, a benefit will be held for Bill’s family in May 2011.
