CHAPPELL – William L. “Cherry Picker,” 87, Portage, died May 12, 2011, at his daughter Donna’s home. Born June 4, 1923, in Portage, son of William L. and Etta Mae (Colbert) Chappell. Preceded in death by parents; wife, Geraldine I. “Sis” (Smay) Chappell, who died March 14, 1996; twin sons, Ross and Ronald; son, Bernard; great-granddaughter, Breanna; great-grandson, Brett; sister, Betty Moore; brothers, Barney and Benjamin; and son-in-law, Harry Rose. Survived by children, Gloria, wife of Vernon Lee, Cresson; Brenda, wife of Leroy Rummell Jr., Nanty Glo; Donna Rose, Portage; Diane Madison, Salix; and William J., married to Ellen Settle, Portage; 13 grandchildren; 20 great-grandchildren; one great-great-grandson; sister, Barbara Dishart, Summerhill; and brothers, Robert, Strongstown; Bernard Newton, Summerhill; and Bradley, Ebensburg. William owned and operated Chalan & Chappell Lumber Co. in Shoemaker, Pa. He was a World War II Army veteran, having served with the 558th Anti-Aircraft Artillery Battalion in the European Theater. Life member of Portage Amvets, Portage VFW and Portage American Legion. Also a member of Benscreek Sportsmen’s Club. Friends will be received from 11 a.m. until time of funeral service at 2 p.m. Saturday at Charles O. Dimond Funeral Home Inc., South Fork, by the Rev. Jason McQueen.
